Spiš Castle is one of the largest castle complexes in Central Europe – its grounds exceed 4 hectares. The medieval castle was built in the 12th century and in the 15th century became a representative noble residence. After the fire in 1780 it remained in ruins, and conservation has been underway since the 1970s. Together with Levoča and the churches in the surrounding area, it has been listed on the UNESCO World Heritage List since 1993.
