Levoča is a medieval town surrounded by walls that developed in the 13th and 14th centuries. The main square is lined with Gothic and Renaissance burgher houses, among the landmarks is the Basilica of St. James with ten altars from the 15th and 16th centuries. The most famous work is the late-Gothic wooden main altar, 18.6 m high, which around 1510 was created by Master Paul of Levoča. The town is part of the UNESCO ensemble together with Spiš Castle.
